Welcome to the Slow Computing any% Speedrunning Contest; also known as watching digital paint dry.

The goal of this contest is simple. To celebrate the long code [https://xkcd.com/303/] times, we're running an informal contest to celebrate this era of batch processing.

== Objective and Rules ==

It's pretty simple:
* Using any vintage computer of your choice, perform a long-running task of some sort
* Livestream, or otherwise provide regular status updates that show how far you have gotten.
* Emulators and the like are A-OK; just let us know what it's doing.

After each run, success or failure, our judges (which is mostly just the regulars in #paint-drying on [https://discord.gg/V8esNah Discord]) will deem what, if any titles such run has earned, and an entirely subjective place on the Wall of Pain. There are absolutely no prizes besides the knowledge that you might be immortalized here for the life of the wiki.

Welcome to the Slow Computing any% Speedrunning Contest; also known as watching digital paint dry.

The goal of this contest is simple. To celebrate the long code [https://xkcd.com/303/] times, we're running an informal contest to celebrate this era of batch processing.

It's pretty simple:
* Using any vintage computer of your choice, perform a long-running task of some sort
* Livestream, or otherwise provide regular status updates that show how far you have gotten.
* Emulators and the like are A-OK; just let us know what it's doing.

After each run, success or failure, our judges (which is mostly just the regulars in #paint-drying on [https://discord.gg/V8esNah Discord]) will deem what, if any titles such run has earned, and an entirely subjective place on the Wall of Pain. Bit of a music junkie. Also a computer nerd, but doesn't program much of anything, just kinda uses them.

You may know me from the server for (currently) compiling rust on, as the kids would say, a "scuffed" setup (i should stop speaking), or other things. Dunno.

Hardware? lol.
* iMac (2021, M1): my main machine, and what i use for basically everything.
* "Azul" (Core 2 Quad Q6600, 4GB RAM, Radeon HD 7870, Fractal Focus G case): Basically a testing rig. But also my gaming rig. Because it was cheap enough, and just 'cause I can.
* "Lapbottom" (HP Pavilion AU123CL, Core i5-7200U, 12GB RAM): Occasional server, mostly just sits around in case I have a use for it.

== Windows NT Version ==

The Windows port is based on a modified version of Cygwin, Congruent ToolBuster, and newly-developed adaptation layer code, by NeXT, and has additional functionality, to support interoperability with OLE, and Visual BASIC/COM.

This version was codenamed <code>Bastion4R1</code>, according to the "About NeXT Software" dialogue/tool.

Many of the UNIX/POSIX commands are based on the Congruent ToolBuster distribution of various GNU projects, including GNU FileUtils 3.1.

=== NeXT Mach Emulation Daemon v2.0 ===
This is kept in <code>./NextLibrary/System/machd.exe</code>, relative to the installation directory of OPENSTEP Enterprise, and implements a thin veneer of Mach's messaging APIs on top of a Windows MailSlot (<code>\\.\mailslot\NeXT\</code>)-consuming message pump. It is intended to be ran as a Windows Service, and the main installation process will attempt to configure this, but it is also possible to run the daemon's executable with the <code>-install</code>, or <code>-remove</code> arguments, to install or uninstall the service, or with the <code>-d</code> argument, to keep it running as a foreground process that prints debugging information on the standard output.

The WindowServer implementation is located in <code>./NextLibrary/System/WindowServer.exe</code>, relative to the installation directory of OPENSTEP Enterprise, and is a 1.6MB binary that implements ASCII85, CCITT fax codecs, JPEG, LZW compression, the PostScript engine/font rendering, GDI contexts, Mach port communication, mapping the cursor location, alpha channels, and binding Win32/OpenStep widgets/window drawing.

A config file, written in PostScript, is used to configure BubbleJet and laser printers, and <code>./NextLibrary/System/PS.VM.le</code> (which seems to be in an undocumented format), contains implementations of PostScript drawing commands (for things like shapes and colours), and handling mouse events.

This is implemented in <code>./NextLibrary/System/nmserver.exe</code>, relative to the OPENSTEP Enterprise installation directory, and communicates with the Mach Emulation Daemon to handle with port right arbitration, naming services, and TCP socket binding.
